Over 100 Acres Of Rice Farms Destroyed After Bridge Spillage

Over 100 acres of rice farms at Gomoa Okyereko in the Gomoa East District have been submerged and destroyed following the release of a temporary bridge blockage by a contractor working on the dualization of the Kasoa-Winneba Highway.

According to affected farmers, the contractor—who had earlier blocked River Ayensu to facilitate the construction of a modern bridge—failed to notify them before opening the channel.

The sudden release of the water flooded vast portions of the rice fields, destroying crops cultivated through significant financial investment.

In an interview with Adom News, several distraught farmers expressed their frustration, stating that many of them had taken out loans to finance their farming activities and now face huge losses without any prior warning or preparation.

The farmers are calling on the government to step in with emergency support and compensation packages to help them recover from the devastation.

They stressed that the situation not only affects their livelihoods but also threatens local food production and economic stability in the area.

Meanwhile, the District Chief Executive for Gomoa East, Margaret Naana Ackon, has assured the farmers of the Assembly’s support.

She acknowledged the severity of the damage and pledged to engage relevant stakeholders to provide relief and explore avenues for possible compensation.
