Following the tragic death of nine individuals in Obuasi due to a clash between the Ghana Armed Forces and some youth, Prophet Ajagurajah has expressed concerns that the issue is likely to be ignored without justice being served.
In a video posted on social media on January 22, 2025, the leader of the Ajagurajah movement, Bishop Kwabena Asiamah predicted that the persons responsible for the deaths would not face any consequences.
He emphasised that the incident had a spiritual backing, adding that AngloGold Ashanti would only compensate the families of the deceased without conducting the necessary investigations.
“Gold needs blood and leaders of AngloGold Ashanti have protected themselves yet they are not doing what needs to be done. So, the spirit in that mining environment will just possess the young boys and this will result in a fight… So what is going on in Obuasi is spiritual and it will never come to an end.
“Let’s give it two years because no one can resolve this. Justice will not be served for the boys who died. The company will only provide financial compensation to the families, and in the worst-case scenario, the military might claim self-defence,” he claimed.
He further advised the authorities of AngloGold Ashanti to perform annual sacrifices to appease the spirits at the mining site to prevent future confrontations.
“There should be an annual sacrifice. At least ten cows should be sacrificed each year to prevent such incidents because gold needs blood. If this is not done, the spirits will possess the boys, leading to more clashes with military personnel,” he stated.
On Sunday, January 19, 2025, a confrontation occurred between the Ghana Armed Forces and a group of small-scale miners in Obuasi.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces, in a press statement, indicated that the individuals who attacked the AngloGold Ashanti miners were illegal miners, not small-scale miners, numbering about 60.
The statement further mentioned that the 60 men breached the security fence of the AngloGold Ashanti mines and intruded into the Cote D’or Ramp to enter the Deep Decline of the mines.
