NPP’s Performance During Assembly Election Signaled Party’s Defeat But We Ignored – Nana Yaw Wiredu

Presiding Member of the Asokwa Municipal in the Ashanti region, Nana Yaw Wiredu, has highlighted some contributing factors leading to the defeat of NPP in the 2024 general election.

In an interview on Wontumi morning show, Mr. Wiredu stated that the writing was on the wall, and the party’s leadership ignored the warning signs at their own peril.

He pinpointed the 2023 Assemblyman elections as a crucial turning point that signaled the NPP’s defeat. He argued that the party’s performance in those elections should have served as a wake-up call for the leadership.

“Unfortunately, the warning signs were ignored, and the party continued on a path that ultimately led to their defeat,” he said.

Hon. Wiredu emphasized the need for NPP executives to support and motivate assembly members, who he believes have been neglected. He argued that these members are the backbone of the party, working tirelessly at the grassroots level to promote the party’s agenda. By neglecting them, the party created a power vacuum that was exploited by their opponents.

Hon. Wiredu also criticized the party’s selection process for the Council of State election, calling it “the wrong path from day one.” He argued that the process was flawed, leading to the selection of candidates who were not representative of the party’s values and ideals. This, he believed, contributed significantly to the party’s defeat.

Furthermore, Hon. Wiredu alleged that some coordinating directors, acting on behalf of Municipal Chief Executives (MCEs), were compromised and had the power to alter lists at their discretion. This, he argued, created a breeding ground for corruption and manipulation, ultimately undermining the party’s chances of winning.

To address these issues, Hon. Wiredu urged NPP executives to meet with assembly members in every region to discuss and resolve their concerns. By doing so, the party can work towards rebuilding and strengthening its foundation. He emphasized the need for the party to reconnect with its grassroots supporters and to empower them to take ownership of the party’s agenda.

He emphasized, it is crucial for the party to reconnect with its grassroots supporters and to empower them to drive the party’s agenda forward.
