NPP Regional Elections: Aspiring Chairpersons To Pay Ghc5,000 Filing Fee
All individuals aspiring to hold the position of regional chairperson in any of the16 regions at the next New Patriotic Party (NPP) regional annual delegates’ conference will pay a filing fee of GHC5,000, the NPP’s second-highest decision-making body, the National Council, has announced.
A communiqué issued by the party on 13 May 2022 and signed by the party’s general secretary, John Boadu, said that the National Council, at a meeting held on Thursday 12 May 2022, also approved a filing fee of GHC2,000 for all individuals aspiring to hold other positions at the regional level.
Positions
Apart from the regional chairmanship positions, among the other posts to be contested during the regional annual delegates’ conference are the first regional vice-chairperson, second regional vice-chairperson, regional secretary, assistant regional secretary and regional treasurer.
The other positions are regional organiser, regional women’s organiser, regional youth organiser and regional Nasara co-ordinator.
Internal mechanisms
As part of the rules and regulations approved by the National Council for the conduct of the elections, all individuals who decide to contest for positions in the regional elections will have to exhaust all internal grievance mechanisms and not resort to external means of dispute resolution.
“Any member of the party or aspirant who feels aggrieved at any point in the process SHALL exhaust ALL available internal resolution mechanisms following Article 4 of the Party Constitution and the decision of the National Appeals Committee on the matter shall be final and binding,” the communiqué signed by Boadu said.
Reaffirm suspensions
Following the review of the constituency executives elections by the National Council at its 12 May meeting, and having regard to the peculiar nature of the Assin North, Jomoro and Savelugu constituencies, where the NPP is challenging the 2020 parliamentary election results in court, the communiqué noted that the National Council had decided to reaffirm “the party’s decision to temporarily suspend the conduct of constituency executives elections in these three constituencies until further notice”.
“The National Council thereupon decided, under Article 10(3)(1) of the party constitution, and considering the exigencies of the situation at hand, to extend the mandate of the current constituency executives in these three constituencies (Assin North, Jomoro and Savelugu), to enable the constituency executives to participate in the impending regional and annual delegates’ conference of the party, until otherwise communicated by the party having regard to developments in court concerning the election petitions,” the communiqué read.
The NPP’s regional annual delegates’ conference shall, among other things, elect regional executive officers of the party to serve a four-year term. The conference will take place between 27 and 29 May 2022.
