The home of Mustapha Ussif, former Minister of Youth and Sports and Member of Parliament for Yagaba/Kubori, has reportedly been attacked by some thugs.
The attack, which occurred just weeks after the December 7, 2024, general elections and the peaceful transition of power to President John Dramani Mahama, underscores growing concerns about escalating insecurity across the country.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, January 22, Mr Ussif expressed deep concern about the deteriorating security situation, condemning what he described as unchecked acts of violence.
“These hooligans have unleashed unrestrained mayhem on public institutions and innocent citizens,” he stated.
The Yagaba/Kubori MP provided details of violent incidents in his constituency, saying, “In my constituency, some miscreants attacked the district assembly office, locked up the place, and sacked all the staff. Just yesterday, some NDC violent youth invaded my house.”
Criticism of Police and government response
Mr Ussif criticised the Ghana Police Service for failing to act in response to the violence, despite ample evidence circulating on social media.
“The Ghana Police Service watched this happen without any arrest. This act of violence are serious threat to the peace of our country,” he said.
He also accused the new government and the NDC of failing to restrain their supporters, adding, “It is worrying the new government and the NDC has not been able to take any action to restrain their supporters from this act of violence across the country.”
Call for action
In a direct appeal to President Mahama, Mr Ussif urged swift measures to address the growing insecurity and lawlessness.
“I want to therefore call on His Excellency the President to prioritise the security situation of our country by taking action over the increase in violence and lawlessness being displayed by his party members,” he stated.
This incident adds to the list of post-election unrest, raising concerns about national security and public safety. Stakeholders and citizens alike are calling for decisive government action to maintain peace and stability in the wake of the recent political transition.
