In the 1998 Congress in Sunyani, a young civil engineer emerged as one of the leading campaigners for Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. At a time when many were still finding their political footing, Kwabena Adjei Agyapong had already chosen his path, loyalty to conviction and dedication to the Danquah-Busia-Dombo tradition. Though Nana Akufo-Addo lost that contest, Kwabena Agyapong did not allow disappointment to weaken his commitment to the party. He demonstrated what can best be described as putting the party first.
After the congress, he threw his full weight behind the party’s elected presidential candidate, John Agyekum Kufuor. He campaigned tirelessly and demonstrated such dedication that he became one of President Kufuor’s trusted aides. When the New Patriotic Party won power in 2000, Kufuor appointed him as his Press Aide, a role that required discretion and absolute trust. It was a clear recognition of his competence and loyalty.
In 2008, at the Legon Congress, Kwabena Agyapong stepped forward to contest for the party’s presidential candidacy. He lost decisively. For many politicians, such a defeat could have marked the beginning of bitterness or withdrawal. But not Kwabena Agyapong. He remained committed to the party and continued to campaign for its success, proving that his ambition never outweighed his loyalty.
In 2014, he made a remarkable political comeback when he contested and defeated the well known Sir John to become General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party. It was a significant victory that signaled his enduring relevance within the party’s grassroots and delegate base. However, in 2015, he was suspended alongside National Chairman Paul Afoko and Second Vice Chairman Sammy Crabbe over issues of anti party conduct. The events surrounding their suspension were highly controversial and remain a sensitive chapter in the party’s history.
What stands out in that difficult period was Kwabena Agyapong’s restraint. He avoided the media. He did not embark on a public campaign against the party. He did not seek to embarrass the tradition he had served for decades. When Paul Afoko initiated legal actions and he was expected to testify in court, Kwabena Agyapong declined to say anything that would damage the party. He chose silence over sabotage and drama.
The party won power in 2016, yet throughout the four year administration, Kwabena Agyapong was not given any government appointment. As the 2020 elections approached, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo personally called on him to join the national campaign. He responded positively and worked diligently. The party secured victory again in 2020. Still, he was not appointed to any position during the subsequent term.
In 2023, Kwabena Agyapong launched another bid to become the party’s presidential candidate. He was unsuccessful once again. Nevertheless, he rallied behind the chosen flagbearer, Mahamudu Bawumia, and worked closely with him during the 2024 elections. His conduct reflected maturity and unwavering dedication to party unity.
In 2026, he contested the presidential primaries yet again and lost. Even in defeat, he has demonstrated statesmanship by cooperating fully with Dr. Bawumia and prioritizing the collective interest of the party over personal ambition.
Kwabena Adjei Agyapong’s journey is a testament to resilience and loyalty without inducement. He has faced defeat, suspension, exclusion, and disappointment, yet he has never allowed frustration to push him into disloyalty. His consistency, endurance, and discipline set him apart.
He may not always dominate headlines, but his record speaks loudly for him. The New Patriotic Party needs individuals with his spirit, men who endure hardship without abandoning principle, who accept defeat without betraying the cause, and who remain steadfast even when uncelebrated.
Kwabena Adjei Agyapong is indeed a true patriotic giant, steady, resilient, and peerless. May Allah grant him long life and reward him abundantly at him own time. KAA!♥️
