Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu Constituency, Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo Markin, has condemned the intimidation and persecution of former government officials from the opposition party.
He emphasized that such actions hinder the country’s development and urged the government to desist from them, promoting unity and cooperation instead.
Afenyo Markin made these remarks during the commissioning of a 6-unit classroom block at A.M.E. Basic School in Effutu, which he named after GraceLove Osae, a former teacher who contributed significantly to education in Effutu. The legislator pledged to motivate teachers and build an ultra-modern ICT lab for the school.
The Minority Leader’s concerns echo those of other critics who argue that persecuting former government officials can create a culture of impunity and undermine the rule of law.
The call follows the latest raid on the home of former Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor, Dr Ernest Addison, during which security operatives allegedly stole GHC10,000 and jewellery belonging to his wife.
The Effutu MP dared the President John Mahama to change the status quo and leave a legacy that he would be remembered for.
In a related development, the Deputy Minority Leader in Parliament, Patricia Appiagyei, has also called for an immediate end to the alleged harassment of former government officials.
