Mfantsipim@150: Planning Committee Calls For Support As School Unveils Year-Long Celebration

The Chairman of the 150th Anniversary Planning Committee of Mfantsipim School, Capt. Johnny Yamoah, has called on all old boys to rally behind the committee to ensure a successful celebration.

Speaking exclusively to Movement News during a pre-launch press briefing, Capt. Yamoah underscored the significance of the milestone. He noted that as the first secondary school established in Ghana, the anniversary will not only celebrate the institution’s rich heritage but also contribute meaningfully to the development of secondary school education through dialogues and public lectures.

He expressed optimism that the activities lined up would spark critical discussions aimed at improving the education sector.

According to him, the Mfantsipim@150 celebration, under the theme “A Legacy of Excellence, Leadership and Service to Inspire the Future,” is designed to honour the school’s proud heritage, inspire current students, and strengthen the foundation for the next century.

“The anniversary year will run from February 18 until December 2026. It will feature nationally significant events, including the official launch of the sesquicentennial on April 11 in Accra. An invitation has been extended to the Vice President of the Republic, Her Excellency Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, to grace the occasion,” he stated.

The programme will also feature a Night of Awards to honour old boys, past and current staff, and public figures; both alumni and non-alumni who have contributed significantly to the development of the school and pre-tertiary education in Ghana.

The climax of the celebration will be two weeks of activities from November 4 to 15, 2026. The Grand Anniversary Durbar and Speech Day is scheduled for November 14, 2026, and is expected to be attended by President John Dramani Mahama, the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the Omanhene of the Oguaa Traditional Area, Osabarima Kwesi Atta II, among other dignitaries.

Present at the pre-launch press briefing event, was the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis, an old student of the school, as well as clergy from the Methodist Church Ghana and other distinguished guests.

As part of fundraising efforts, a short code campaign has been launched to enable staff, students, alumni, friends of “Botwe,” and the general public to support the initiative. Donations can be made by dialing 9201876# on MTN, Telecel, and AirtelTigo and following the prompts.
