Media Silence Could Push Ghana Towards Collapse – Kweku Agyei

A member of the NPP communications team, Kweku Agyei has criticized sections of the Ghanaian media, claiming that their silence on key national issues could contribute significantly to the country’s potential collapse.

Speaking on Wontumi TV, he noted that during the administration of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the media extensively criticized appointments of family members and close allies into government positions. However, he argued, the same level of scrutiny is not being applied under the current government of President John Dramani Mahama.

Kweku Agyei alleged that the President’s brother, Ibrahim Mahama, recently purchased a private jet, yet Ghanaian journalists have not raised concerns.

“If members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had acquired a private jet during the administration of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the media and public would have strongly criticized it,” he said.

He further claimed that Sammy Gyamfi, CEO of GoldBod, received financial support from Ibrahim Mahama during his father-in-law’s funeral, with donations reportedly totaling about GH₵10 billion, covering most of the funeral expenses.

According to Kweku Agyei, these matters have largely gone unreported by the media. He also highlighted concerns raised by the Minority Caucus in Parliament regarding GoldBod’s operations, which allegedly sold 18 tons of gold, even as the government struggles to pay cocoa farmers and electricity tariffs continue to rise.

“Ghana’s gold has been sold at lower prices, and if the country attempts to buy it back later, it may do so at higher prices, potentially resulting in losses exceeding GH₵1 billion,” he warned.

He urged the media to play its watchdog role effectively to ensure transparency and prevent economic mismanagement in the country.
