Mahama’s Call For Independent Audit Of Election Results Unfounded – NPP
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has shot down calls by the 2020 flagbearer of National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, for an independent audit of the results of the 2020 polls.
Addressing the media, the General Secretary of the NPP, John Boadu said such a call is unfounded.
“All of a sudden we are hearing about auditing, where does this place in our political arrangements? Instead of you to do your work by independently collating your results, you are shirking the responsibilities. Where in our democracy does this fit into?”
He added that the wide margin of victory against the NDC is an indication that there are no arguments about the Presidential results.
“Nana Akufo-Addo won the elections with a huge margin. It is a huge feat. The difference between the two candidates was 517,231 so the presidential elections were not even close, so there was nothing contentious about it in the first place. I think it is better for him to come to terms with his loss. He lost by a huge margin and he should just accept it.”
Mr. Mahama in an interview with VOA News on Tuesday suggested the independent audit of the results of the elections to settle the controversy surrounding it.
He assured that if the independent audit done by the EC is satisfactory “I’ll be the first to concede and walk away.”
The credibility of the results released by the electoral management body has also been questioned by some observers following the revision of the total valid votes declared by the EC on December 9, 2020, after the EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa, announced wrong figures.
Subsequent press releases from the EC also contained some numerical errors.
