Mahama’s Actions Against Judiciary Driven by Political Agenda – Lawyer Gyinde

A lecturer at GIMPA Law School, Lawyer Kwaku Anane Gyinde, has raised concerns about President Mahama’s intentions regarding the judiciary.

According to him, the President’s actions, including the suspension and plans to remove Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, are driven by a political agenda rather than a genuine desire to reform the judiciary.

Gyinde pointed to the President’s past comments while in opposition, where he described the Supreme Court as “unanimous FC” in a manner that Gyinde finds not only offensive but also contemptuous. This behavior, Gyinde believes, suggests that President Mahama had predetermined to remove judges from the Supreme Court, starting with the Chief Justice.

“It’s unfortunate that the President would seek to undermine the independence of the judiciary in this way. Ghanaian judges have an excellent international reputation, serving in prominent positions such as the International Criminal Court, the International Court of Justice, and the African Court of Human Rights in Tanzania. The President’s actions will not only undermine the rule of law in Ghana but also tarnish the country’s reputation on the international stage. We have a judiciary that is respected globally, and it’s unfortunate that the President’s actions will give us a bad reputation,” Gyinde lamented.

Gyinde made these comments in an interview with Agyenkwa Nana on Wontumi TV, highlighting the need for the judiciary to remain independent and impartial.
