A New Patriotic Party (NPP) Eastern Regional secretary hopeful, Buckman Akufo, has said ex-President Mahama is fond of breaking his promises.
He made this known during an interview on Movement In The Morning, a political show on Accra-based Movement TV when the host, Kwaku Dawuro asked him of his opinion on John Mahama’s statement on repealing the e-levy act.
“As the campaign lead for the late President Atta Mills, Mahama promised Ghanaians his government would introduce the one time premium policy when they are voted into power, and when they gained power they never did. People like Dr. Dufuor, the former governor for Bank of Ghana can come on the ticket of the NDC and promise Ghanaians because promises from such people are worth considering but for Mahama we cannot take his promises serious. He will not revoke the e-levy, he is fond of lying to Ghanaians”, Buckman said.
President Mahama during his presentation last Monday stated emphatically that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will invalidate the electronic levy act when voted into power. In his submission, he said, “Government’s desperation to tax Ghanaians to get the nation out of the hell hole it has dumped us will not succeed because Government’s own budget proposals show that the e-levy will not make any significant contribution in resolving our problems but would exert an adverse toll on the people of Ghana”.
“We in the NDC do not oppose taxation as a principle. We will not be pretentious and couch fanciful slogans to condemn the principle of taxation like the NPP did in the past. We are, however, implacably opposed to distortionary and burdensome taxes like the e-levy that only force Ghanaians to endure more suffering. A new National Democratic Congress Government, God willing and with the votes of the sovereign people of Ghana – in 2025 – will repeal the E-Levy Act’’.
“He will not cancel the e-levy, Ghanaian’s should consider the benefit of paying the levy rather than Mahama’s lies”, Buckman added.
