John Mahama and Johnson Asiedu Nketia have been captured to make certain disparaging comments follows a decision by the Supreme Court to throw out a writ by a private legal practitioner, Justice Abdulai.
The private legal practitioner was challenging the decision of First Deputy Speaker Joseph Osei-Owusu to be counted as part of the quorum to pass the 2022 budget.
But in a unanimous decision given by Justices Jones Dotse, Nene Amegather, Prof Ashie Kotey, Mariama Owusu, Lovelace Johnson, Clemence Honyenuga and Yonny Kulendi, the writ was thrown out.
Shortly after the ruling, the 2020 flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. John Mahama, described the ruling by the Court as “shocking but not surprising.”
According to him, the Wednesday ruling was “an unfortunate interpretation for convenience that sets a dangerous precedent of judicial interference in parliamentary procedure for the future.”
His party General Secretary, Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia also told an Accra based radio station that “the outcome of the ruling was predictable looking at the constitution of the court right now, it will be impossible for it to rule against any case that the government has an interest in”.
And in responding to their comment, Nana Obiri Boahen stated on Wontumi TV that the Attorney General (AG) could take both Mr. Mahama and Johnson Asiedu Nketia on by citing them for contempt.
He was however quick to add that the two were like “houseflies” and it would be better for the AG to ignore them for political reasons.
“Mahama, Bagbin, Asiedu Nketia can be cited for contempt. But for political reasons, the Attorney General must overlook their statements…They are like houseflies, if you react on them with anger, you might end up bruising your sore the more”, he said.
