Let’s Scrap The Delegates System – Kwabena Agyei Agyapong

Former General Secretary and a flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyapong has called on the New Patriotic Party to consider scrapping the delegates’ system of electing party leaders and allow all card – bearing members in good standing to take part in the election of party leaders.

This in his view will help eliminate the monecracy which is gaining roots in the party resulting in the hijack of the party by those with money thereby producing candidates not fit for the job.

Speaking with Kwaku Dawuro on Movement in the Morning show on Movement TV and Wontumi Radio in Accra, Ing. Kwabena Agyapong noted that if care is not taken, a time will come when people with dubious characters would use money to gain leadership position in the party.

“It’s high time politicians stop inducing delegates with money for their votes, but rather inculcate in the youth, the spirit of patriotism, so as to move the country forward. It’s very sad that people worship the rich without questioning the source of their wealth and called for a change he said”, he said.

He also called on the rich who boast with their wealth to desist from doing that and also advised journalists who promote riches by going to the extent of showcasing the properties of rich men and women to the extent of showing the interior of their rooms to stop.

On the issue of some aspirants telling delegates to vote for them because they have been supporting the party financially, with reference to Kennedy Agyapong in particular, Mr. Kwabena Agyapong said everyone has played a role in the success story of the NPP, therefore it is out of place for Kennedy Agyapong to say that he should be voted for to be the flag bearer because of his support for the party.

He noted that Kennedy Agyapong has benefitted from the party by way of contract so if he supports the party it should not be a big deal, adding some of them had also sacrificed immensely for the party.
