The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has responded to the disparaging comments former President John Mahama promoted on his social media handle that described Akyem people as ‘sakawa’ folks by stating that he wouldn’t disrespect any tribe in Ghana.
President Akufo-Addo in an interview at the Jubilee House with Oman fm which was monitored by Wontumionline.com, stated that the posture of the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, is divisive and one that is not befitting of a political leader.
On John Mahama’s Facebook page, he posted an article described the people from Akyem in the Eastern region as “Sakawa Boys”.
But President Akufo-Addo in his interview highlighted that “it is sad for a person who has been President before to say Akeym people are sakawa people”.
The President therefore called on civil society groups and religious leaders to come out and condemn the statements.
In President Akufo-Addo’s view, former President Mahama must be told his statements were “unnecessary” adding that “imagine if someone from the NPP had said something bad about Gonjas”.
He noted that Ghana needed leaders who by deeds and words, would help the nation to develop.
