I Would Have Struggled Without ‘Lapaz Toyota’ – Guru

Popular Ghanaian musician Guru has opened up about his 2011 “monster” hit Lapaz Toyota, describing how the song became his breakthrough and cemented his place in the music industry.

Speaking with Nana Romeo on the Atuu show, Guru revealed that after releasing massive hits like Kasiebo and Democracy, he struggled to produce another chart-topping track until Lapaz Toyota came along.

He explained that the song did not only revive his career but also earned him his first record label deal.

“Lapaz Toyota was the song that got me to where the successful people were. It ordained the brand. After Kasiebo and Democracy, it was very difficult to get another hit. I was really struggling and would have left the music scene early, but Lapaz Toyota changed everything; it even gave me my first record label,” he said.

Guru further stated that the track’s success improved his personal life and enabled him to support friends who were struggling at the time.

“I saw the difference in life — it uplifted me. Not just me, but I was able to hold down the friends I was struggling with, and now they’re very rich. Those achievements stood out to me; the rest were normal,” he added.
