Ghana’s top striker, Asamoah Gyan has somewhat rejected calls for him to return to the Black Stars ahead of the 2022 World Cup to be held in Qatar.
Asamoah Gyan, who is the top scorer for the national team with 51 goals – the highest in the history of Ghana’s soccer, hasn’t retired but is currently not actively involved in football.
Following Ghana’s qualification to the Qatar World Cup after defeating Nigeria, there are calls for the former captain of the Black Stars to be listed among the players and play in the World Cup.
Those calling for his return believe in his goal scoring prowess and are optimistic his presence in the national team will bring a good fortune for the Black Stars in this year’s World Cup.
But, in an interview with host Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’ programme Monday morning to announce the launch of his memoir, Asamoah Gyan deflated the hopes of his admirers as he stated emphatically that he isn’t in a good shape to play in the World Cup.
To him, he must earn the call up back to the team but it shouldn’t be an automatic pass for him to be enlisted in the Black Stars.
“I think I have to earn the call up. I have to get a team and be fit. For me, I think I have to earn the call up . . . I have to be fit physically . . . I feel I’m naturally gifted player who can do anything on the field but physically, I don’t think I’m ready. Yeah, I don’t think I’m fit yet,” he said.
He added; “I have to shed some weight. I have to be in the right shape to play any competitive football.”
