A communication team member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kofi Ntiamoah has said that although there are some natural factors that contribute to flooding, human activities are a major factor.
In explaining his assertion, Mr. Ntiamoah noted that President Akufo-Addo should be commended for the tremendous projects executed as far as better drainage systems in the country’s capital is concerned.
“Nana Addo should be commended for the great job done as far as drainage systems in the Greater Accra are concerned, is unprecedented. It’s unfortunate the country still experiences flooding whenever it rains. This is a clear indication that although there are natural factors, the human factor must be critically addressed,”he said.
Meanwhile, Mr. Ntiamoah did not highlight what the human activities he mentioned are.
However, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on May 25, 2022, directed Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Greater Accra Region to demolish all structures that cause flooding in the city.
“MMDCEs have been charged to ensure that obstructions to the free flow of water as well as developments on waterways are removed immediately. MMDAs are also to ensure the strict adherence to developments in the planning laws of the country and sanction staff who issue permits for structures to be put on waterways to serve as a deterrent for those who engage in such acts”, President Nana Akufo-Addo ordered.
The onset of the rainy season has seen many parts of Accra flooded, with several homes counting their losses after floodwaters destroyed a number of properties.
