How To Stay Strong – NPP Strongman Chairman Wontumi, Drops A Secret

A popular voice on the NPP’s campaign trail, Chairman Wontumi, on Monday took Wontumi TV viewers and radio listeners through a brief yet far reaching introductory course on how to stay healthy and strong by engaging in a regular keep fit activity and eating healthy food.

“I maintain a strict body building regime with emphasis on press –ups. I do 150 press-ups each day before taking my shower.” He revealed in an exclusive interview on Wontumi TV/Radio on Monday in Kumasi.

“He said to a bemused King Eben, ace sports presenter and host of the early morning Wontumi Sports on what has become known as “Chairman talks sports” segment. It is fast becoming popular on the early morning sports programme as it serves as a befitting curtain raiser for the daily incisive and analytical political programme on Wontumi TV/Radio and other platforms hosted by Oheneba Nana Asiedu. It starts at 7.a.m.

“At 44 I look healthier than most of my age mates because of my regular physical training which I do religiously.” He noted with great pride.
“I started with Tae Kwan do and acquired the skill of body movements and how to calculate the distance to avoid or deliver punches in a defensive poise
Chairman Wontumi who took King Eben down memory lane by recalling his sports exploits confirmed that he had earlier wanted to go into active boxing but later he had to shelve the idea due to lack of attention from the instructors at the Kumasi stadium.I was at the Stadium on several occasions but I never could catch the eye of the instructor for me to also go into the ring to exhibit my skill. I therefore became frustrated.” He recalled.

According to Chairman Wontumi what pissed him off most was when a well-built man who had a similar physique as his came around and got all the attention.

“I can’t tell what happened but he was given an instantaneous attention. He was made to jump frog over me and soon hopped into ring to display his talents. I was greatly disappointed.

“I saw boxing as a highly lucrative career and wished I had exploited my potential but because God’s ways are not one’s ways, I backed down when I failed to get an invitation to appear in the ring to train.”
But abandoning the boat of boxing did not bring the curtain down on Chairman Wontumi’s eagerness to pursue other goals.

“I know for sure that if I had stayed in boxing my fame would have surpassed that of Floyd Mayweather Jnr and others. I admired the way Azuma used to fight but I would have achieved better laurels.” He said. All the strong men in Kumasi in those days like the late Cedi and Asase Ye Foam from Atonsu would bear me out. I proved to be stronger than all of them.” Chairman Wontumi noted.

He continued, “In those days that machoism was first introduced in Kumasi with all its attractions. I was the Kingpin. Asaase Foam rated as one of Kumasi’s strongest men in those days could only boast of his exceptional skill in squatting but when it comes to pushing benches, declining and other self defence skills I am above them. I’m Wontumi and anything I set my eyes on I achieve it with the seriousness it needs.” He stated.

On nutrition which compliments his daily workout, Chairman Wontumi had a simple advice, “I eat food substances which are medicinal and refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages. I’m very careful not to accumulate anything toxic waste in my system by being extra cautious of whatever I consume. I eat what can make me 20 years younger. “
