The history surrounding the meteoric rise of Dr. Bawumia has been revisited by Mr. Ishaq Kyei-Brobbey who has credited former President Kufuor for the role he played before Nana Akufo-Addo picked him as his running mate for the 2008 elections.
Mr. Ishaq Kyei-Brobbey disclosed that when former President John Agyekum Kufuor won power in 2000 and appointed Dr. Paul Acquah as Governor of the Central Bank of Ghana, the latter also appointed Bawumia as his special assistant.
“The rest is history and one of the most beautiful histories in this country under the Bank of Ghana”, Mr. Kyei-Brobbey said on the Wontumi Morning Show as he talked about how a young Bawumia dazzled the ex-President and his team at an event in London.
After taking former President Kufuor and his team through a well-researched lecture in London, Kufuor returned the favour by telling Bawumia that “you will go far”, Ishaq Kyei-Brobbey said.
Right after the meeting in London, former President Kufuor appointed Bawumia as Board member to Ghana Telecom and then made “him a co-chair with the late Dr. Akoto on the Economic Coordinate Committee it is similar to what we have now as Economic Management team.”
“They led the negotiations with the IMF for us to get a HIPC relief of $4 billion. Kufuor also appointed him as Chairman of International Financial Market Committee and nobody can contest it”.
Based on the process, Ishaq Kyei-Brobbey asserted that it was former President Kufuor who built Bawumia at Bank of Ghana for Akufo-Addo to pick him as running mate.
“The rest is history”, he said.
When Bawumia was chosen as running mate, Ishaq Kyei-Brobbey stated that there was huge controversy in the NPP but he prevailed.
“Now he is going through primaries to become the Presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party, I am not surprised the same controversy is coming up but Dr. Mahamudu Bwumia is going to survive big time.
Beyond that he is also going to contest as the President of the Republic of Ghana and there is also going to be hue and cry and controversy and then he is going to prevail over John Dramani Mahama and win and break the 8 for the New Patriotic Party”, he emphatically said.
