Guinea Coup: Col. Mamadi Doumbouya To Be Sworn In As President Today
The Guinean military junta, Col. Mamadi Doumbouya who ousted President Alpha conde on September 5 will be sworn in today, as Authority claims.
Earlier this month, Col. Mamadi Doumbouya overthrew the 83 year old incumbent president, Conde who became Guinea’s first democratically-elected president in 2010 and was re-elected in 2015.
The inaugural event will have some form of restrictions as only invited personalities will be permitted to be in attendance. This development was made known by military leaders that was read late Wednesday on the state television
The swearing in of the new president will make the National Transition Council, or CNT, comprising 81 members drawn from political parties, civil society, trade unions, employers, security forces and other bodies, to be saddled with the task of drafting a new Constitution.
The interim government sprouted after Conde’s push for constitutional changes that allowed him to run for a controversial third term in October 2020. The election was claimed to be marred and considered a sham by the opposition. Conde won the election last year but the outcome was followed by heavy protests and mass demonstrations in which dozens of protesters were reported killed .
On Monday, the junta unveiled its “transitional charter” which will be used in driving the nation toward the rule of civilian administration. The charter comprised the drafting of a new constitution and conducting elections. But like most Interim governments, there is uncertainty of the duration of the transition though the charter states that the length of transition will be determined by a joint agreement among the living forces of the nation as well as the National Committee for Rally and Development (CNRD).
