The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) in the Volta Region has cautioned drivers against charging unapproved lorry fares, warning that offenders will face arrest and prosecution.
Volta Regional General Secretary of the GPRTU, Madam Vida Nkpentey, in an interview with Samuel Nana Tawiah, stressed that no fare increases have been sanctioned and that existing fares remain in force.
She urged drivers to comply with the directive, stating that any attempt to impose additional charges would be treated as a violation of transport regulations.
Madam Nkpentey disclosed that the union is expected to meet with Cabinet to discuss the ongoing fare concerns, adding that the outcome, whether an increase or no change, will be communicated to the public.
She also cautioned transport owners against pressuring drivers to raise fares, emphasising that such practices are not permitted in the region.
Passengers have been advised to report any driver charging unapproved fares to the nearest police station, as such actions are considered illegal. She further encouraged commuters to remain calm and rely only on official GPRTU communications for updates.
As it stands, no adjustments have been made to lorry fares in the Volta Region.
