The Government and Organised Labour are set to conclude negotiations on an upward adjustment in the base pay for sector workers today.
According to reports, the parties met on Monday, November 13, 2023, to negotiate the base pay for the year 2024.
Organised Labour proposed a 75.1% increment which took into consideration the current economic situation.
However, the Government team made a counter-proposal of only 10 percent. Subsequently, the Government team later shifted to 12 percent while Labour also moved from 75.1 to 73%.
On the basis of good faith, Organised Labour made a further move from 73 to 60 percent. However, the Government team moved from 12 to 15 percent which was completely rejected by Organised Labour.
Today, at 10am, the parties reconvened at the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations for further engagement. The aim was to reach an agreement on the base pay for sector workers, which will go a long way to improve their standards of living.
It is expected that both parties will find common ground and reach a consensus that will not only be favourable to workers but also the economy of the country.
