Following the cancellation of student visas of some Ghanaians studying at the University of Birmingham in the UK, they are now faced with a possible threat of deportation soon.
This, according to a report by channel1news.com, is due to the delayed tuition fee payments of these students, leading to the cancellation of their student visas.
The report added that the majority of these students are on the Government of Ghana Scholarship Scheme.
They have, however, not been able to pay their fees as the government has also failed to keep its side of the scholarship to remit them with the necessary funds.
The report added that a letter from the UK Visa and Immigration Office, addressed to some of the affected students outlined the only options available to these potential deportees.
It added that they have been instructed to either leave the UK or face further sanctions, which could include detention and prosecution.
“You still have permission until 09 November 2024 and the current conditions of your stay will continue to apply until then. Please ensure that you comply with these conditions. You now have until 09 November 2024 to either leave the United Kingdom (UK) or make another application to stay here. You do not have a right of appeal or administrative review against the decision to cancel your permission.
“If you leave or are already outside, the Common Travel Area (the UK, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man and the Republic of Ireland) before 09 November 2024 your permission will end immediately, and you will have to make a new application to re-enter the UK,” part of the letter stated, the report indicated.
There has so far not been any response from the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat.
GhanaWeb will follow the story and update readers with new information as and when they come.
