The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has issued an unreserved apology to Ghanaians following the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The apology came after an Executive Council meeting held on Wednesday.
In an official statement, the GFA expressed regret over the team’s inability to meet the nation’s expectations, saying:
*”The Ghana Football Association (GFA) wishes to express its sincerest apologies to the good people of Ghana for the Black Stars’ inability to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025.
“We understand the disappointment and frustration this failure has caused, and we share in the pain and sadness of our beloved fans. We acknowledge that the team’s performance fell short of the high expectations of the nation, and for that, we are truly sorry.
“We would like to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt gratitude to our loyal football fans for their unwavering support and encouragement throughout the qualifying campaign. Your passion and dedication drive us to strive for excellence.”*
The Black Stars, four-time AFCON champions, failed to qualify for the prestigious tournament for the first time in 21 years. They finished at the bottom of Group F, which included Niger, Sudan, and Angola, marking the end of a consistent run of qualifications since 2006.
This latest setback adds to a string of disappointing performances in recent years, including early exits at the group stage in the last two AFCON tournaments.
Acknowledging the frustrations of fans, the GFA vowed to work towards improvement, promising that “Ghanaians deserve better.”
To address the team’s struggles, the GFA announced plans to hold a retreat on November 28, bringing together stakeholders to deliberate on the way forward for Ghanaian football.
