Gas Supply Disruption: WAPCo Shuts Down Pipeline Today

Beginning today, the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo), which operates the pipeline, will shut it down for regular maintenance.

In order to inspect and clean the 569 km of pipeline as required by law, the company will be able to launch its Pipeline Inspection Gauge (PIG).

The procedure will drastically reduce the flow of gas from Nigeria to Ghana. In the Tema Power Enclaves, where massive megawatts of electricity are required for industrial, commercial, and residential purposes, the shutdown will also impact the reverse flow of gas from Atuabo in the Western Region to the nation’s power plants.

The facility’s safe, dependable operations in accordance with industry best practices will also be ensured by the required cleaning and inspection tasks, which have been delayed three times since last year.

However, the company stated that an average of roughly 90,000 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscf/d) of gas was needed to push the pipeline during the procedure, which is technically known as pigging.

The Volta River Authority plants in Shama would transport and receive the inspection gauge from Nigeria to Aboadze.

Today, February 5, 2025, will mark the start of the major maintenance activities, which should be finished by March 2 of this year.
