Fire Service Urges Assemblies To Decongest Roads For Better Emergency Response

The Central Regional Command of the Ghana National Fire Service has called on district assemblies to take urgent steps to decongest roads within central business districts to enhance response to emergency fire outbreaks.

Regional Fire Commander, ACFO Melinda Mary Mensah-Atsigah, made the appeal during a fire simulation exercise at the Kotokuraba Market in Cape Coast, held as part of activities to mark International Firefighters’ Week.

She noted that fire tenders often struggle to access congested commercial areas during emergencies, a situation that hampers firefighting efforts and puts lives and property at risk.

“We are urging the assemblies to help clear the roads, especially in the central business areas, so that fire tenders can move in swiftly during emergencies,” she stated.

ACFO Mensah-Atsigah also cautioned drivers to be extra vigilant during the rainy season, advising them to reduce speed and ensure that their vehicle wipers and other essential systems are functioning properly.

Some market traders who witnessed the simulation exercise commended the Fire Service for the practical demonstration.

They said the exercise educated them on how to prevent and respond to fire incidents in the marketplace.

The traders also appealed to city authorities to engage taxi and tricycle (Pragya) drivers to respect the sirens of emergency vehicles and give them the right of way.

They further urged the Fire Service to conduct such simulation exercises regularly to keep the public informed and prepared.
