FIFA Receives South Africa Complaint Against Ghana
FIFA has confirmed receiving a complaint from South Africa FA following their 1-0 defeat against Ghana in 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
“FIFA has received a complaint from the South African FA about this matter and will review it. Please understand we cannot comment further at this stage,” FIFA said in a statement to The Athletic.
South Africa feel they were ‘robbed’ and announced they would be petitioning both CAF and FIFA for a replay of the match.
Ghana won the tight contest at the Cape Coast Stadium thanks to a contentious penalty in the first half.
Leicester City defender Daniel Amartey went down in the South Africa box after minimal contact from defender Rushine de Reuck.
Referee Maguette Ndiaye awarded a penalty, which Andre Ayew, playing his 100th match, scored brilliantly to send Ghana through.
South Africa insists Ghana wouldn’t have won without the ‘support’ of the referee. Bafana needed just a draw to progress as they came into the match three points clear at the top.
They had led the table since matchday two when they beat Ghana by the same scoreline in Johannesburg.
With the draw for the play-offs scheduled for December, FIFA’s decision is expected soon to settle the matter.
