Fake News! “No Lives Were Lost Due To Dumsor”- Tema General Hospital Debunks Widespread Report

The Tema General Hospital has refuted claims that a newborn baby died as a result of power outage at their Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) on Tuesday.

This comes on the back of a viral video showing its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in darkness, with nurses attempting to care for babies during a power outage.

In a statement dated March 27, 2024, the hospital noted that its attention has been drawn to a publication circulating on social media that some lives were lost at the facility, following a power outage known as ‘dumsor’.

The statement signed by the Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Richard Anthony explained that “The dedicated generator set to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)tripped off for a short period, when the power from the national grid was interrupted. However, the hospital’s electricians worked to restore power to the Unit until the national grid was restored.”

“It is worth noting that no lives were lost as a result of this power outage. The hospital will continue to put the health and safety of its patients at the core of its business”, the statement said.
