Western Regional Minister and Member of Parliament for Takoradi, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah has stated that factors that are attributed to the fall of Ghana’s economy cannot be blamed on the Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
His remarks were an attempt to shield Dr. Bawumia from the scathing attack by Ken Agyapong recently said the Vice President cannot be blamed for Ghana’s economic woes.
Speaking on Wontumi Radio in a live interview with Nana Konadu Abu Prah, stand-in host on the Privilege Morning Show on Tuesday, Mr Okyere Darko lamented the comments made by the Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong who in a recent campaign tour attributed the challenges to what he described as the “incompetence on the part of vice president.”
The Western regional minister also labeled the crisis being confronted in the energy sector to what he described as the incompetence during former president Mahama’s regime hence the economic and energy predicaments being encountered by the nation cannot be blamed on Bawumia.
After all, it was a global crisis that affected almost every economy with swift attention by the Leaders of Ghana who are ensuring a great stabilization of the economy after the decline of the global pandemic.
He reiterated that the Nana Addo – Bawumia administration after the destruction caused by the pandemic has confidently managed the economy as a result of good governance and policies hence it is unfair for Bawumia to be accused as the cause of the economic mayhem.
“We were all in the country when COVID broke out. Is it the vice president who brought the COVID or the president? Even the IMF who are giving us a bailout said we (NPP) did not create the problem, as our economic challenges are as a result of COVID,” he stressed
The Minister added that the economy is on track and its growth is now increasing “Dr Bawumia and Nana Addo government are fixing it though they are not the cause of the challenge. This should tell you that Bawumia is competent and for us we know he’s the Jewel in the Crown”. He said.
The Minister questioned the posturing of Mr Agyapong on the campaign platform after “becoming a direct beneficiary of the spoils of the government’s good policies’”
“Is he is speaking for the NDC or for himself in his campaign? Mr Okyere Darko quizzed.
“If it becomes more of a mud-slinging on the part of Kennedy, the NPP will press the knob of its internal mechanism to address such utterances to protect itself, we’ve done that to Kwabena Agyepong and Paul Afoko to win 2016 election” Mr Okyere Darko threatened.
The Assin Central Member of Parliament who is currently on a nationwide presidential campaign tour often tells his supporters and party delegates that “Dr. Bawumia has been unable to rescue Ghana’s economy despite his claims as being an economic strategist.”
The outspoken presidential aspirant indicated that it is abnormal for a Vice President who was directly connected to the President to make references to his readiness to change the country’s bad economic situation when given the mandate to serve as President regardless of his poor contribution to governance when he was directly contributing to the failed government.
