The Ashanti South Region of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has launched a new initiative aimed at curbing power theft and addressing the persistent issue of meter shortages.
The initiative dubbed the Loss Reduction Project involves the installation of advanced smart prepaid meters equipped with sophisticated features to detect and prevent illegal tampering.
As part of the project, old postpaid meters are being replaced with new smart meters, which are designed to tackle illegal power consumption and reduce revenue losses.
The initiative aims to ensure that meters are more accessible to consumers, alleviating the long-standing challenges many customers face due to frequent shortages.
Project Manager Tamara Wiafe, speaking to Adom News, emphasized that the project includes private sector participation, with suppliers actively involved in the installation of the new meters.
She highlighted that the smart meters use a digital approach, allowing consumers to purchase power online, making the process more convenient and efficient.
This initiative is expected to enhance the transparency and efficiency of power consumption in the region, helping to stabilize revenue flow for ECG while providing consumers with a more reliable and accessible system.
