A former deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Obiri Boahen is calling for an early congress and stressing that it was the “magic” his party used in 1998 to win the 2000 general elections.
In an interview on Wontumi TV which was monitored by Wontumionline.com, the former NPP deputy chief scribe stated that the earlier they elect a flagbearer, the better it would be for the party to market their candidate in every village before the main elections.
“The earlier we elect our flagbearer, it will be good for the party. He will be able to tour every village in the country just like former President Kufuor managed to do in 2000”, he said.
He reminder the NPP that just by a mere fact that electorates were able to exchange pleasantries with then candidate Kufuor, it influenced their voting choice which benefitted the NPP in 2000.
“We want to break the 8 so we must do things in a hurry and resolve every difference that comes up…Good living shouldn’t make us forget the past; we must go to the magic we used in 1998”, he stressed.
The National Council of the NPP met on February 02, 2023, to decide on timelines for flagbearer and parliamentary elections.
Earlier reports attributed to the Council said the party had set November 2023 to elect its presidential candidate, January 2024 to elect parliamentary candidates for constituencies with sitting NPP Members of Parliament (MPs) and April 2024 for constituencies without sitting NPP MPs.
But in a statement, the NPP said timelines for the internal polls were yet to be concluded. It added that at the National Council’s last meeting, it was unable to finalize discussions on some proposed dates for the conduct of the primaries.
