The Director of communications for the New Patriotic Party(NPP) in the Okere constituency, Emmanuel Awuku Apiedu has disclosed that the party spoke against the NDC’s decision to seek for support from the International Monetary Fund(IMF) in 2016 because the economy was mismanaged and the then government must be blamed.
Speaking to Kwaku Dawuro on Movement In The Morning Show, Mr. Apiedu asked, “what negotiations did you have with the IMF? Was it beneficial to the citizenry? These are questions the NDC should be answering. In the first place, they sought for an IMF bailout due to gross mismanagement and nothing else”.
Adding that “It’s like a kid writing an essay and presenting it to a teacher for marking. That’s exactly what happened between the NDC and the IMF. The NPP’s decision for an IMF bailout is different from what occasioned NDC’s decision for an IMF bailout. It’s totally different!.”
According to him nobody has said going to the IMF is a taboo.
“What did the NDC’s present to the IMF and what conditionality was given is the question?- how do you agree to a conditionality that prevents employment in the public sector? There were a lot of graduate teachers who were not posted likewise nurses and you want to compare that to ours. It got to a point where the economy couldn’t support the expenditure meanwhile there was no COVID-19 or Russia-Ukraine war”, he stated.
