The Ghana National Fire Service averted disaster on Monday, August 19, 2024, by salvaging and transferring spilt fuel into another tank after a fuel truck overturned at Odorkor Tarrazo in the Greater Accra Region.
The driver of the fuel tanker, in an attempt to climb a steep hill, lost control of the brakes, causing the truck to reverse into a gutter. The truck then overturned, spilling fuel onto the road.
In a statement on Facebook, the fire service reported that personnel had to use a foam concentrate substance to prevent the spilt fuel from igniting.
“Firefighters from the Dansoman fire station responded to a diesel spill at Odorkor Tarrazo near the Pacific filling station in Accra. The crew arrived at the scene in good time to find an overturned DAF fuel tanker with registration number GR- 7764-P spilling diesel from its tank.
“The Crew used foam concentrate to prevent sparks and managed the spillage. The tanker was partially damaged, but a significant amount of diesel was salvaged and transferred to another tank.”
It added that there were no casualties from the incident.
“Preliminary investigations indicates the brakes of the fuel tanker failed when it was attempting to climb a steep hill which resulted in the vehicle reversing into a gutter. No casualties were recorded.”
