Direct Pressure to Parliament, Not Mahama – Sam George on LGBTQ Bill

Communications Minister and Ningo-Prampram MP reaffirms his anti-LGBTQ+ position, clarifies that no bill has reached the presidency yet

Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram and Minister of Communications, Samuel George Nartey — popularly known as Sam George — has reaffirmed his hardline position on the LGBTQ+ issue, describing it as “a serious aberration of the mind” and vowing to fight it with everything he holds dear.

In a pointed statement, the minister framed his stance as a matter of protecting children rather than scoring political points, saying: “Protecting our children’s innocence isn’t political, it’s priority. No bait, no politics.”

“When people say that I have changed my position, I’ve actually stuck to my word. At my vetting, I indicated that I would reintroduce the bill as a private member’s bill — I said I was going to reintroduce the bill, and I did.”

Sam George also moved to correct what he described as public misconceptions surrounding the bill’s progress. Responding to those calling on President John Mahama to sign the legislation, he clarified that no bill has yet been transmitted to the presidency for assent — the legislation is still before Parliament.

He reintroduced the bill in August last year alongside a number of parliamentary colleagues, fulfilling a pledge he made during his ministerial vetting. He maintained that his position has not wavered at any point throughout the process.

Rather than directing anger at the President, Sam George urged advocates of the bill to channel their pressure toward Parliament, calling on the House to accelerate its consideration of the legislation. He expressed confidence that once Parliament passes the bill, President Mahama will append his signature.
