Few months after the Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Mr Akwasi Agyemang has disclosed that other countries were fervently working to have festivals such as Afro Nation and Afrofutre formerly known as Afrochella in their countries, Nigerian music star, Davido has hinted that Nigeria will for host this year’s AfroNation festival for the first time.
“Afro Nation is going to Lagos for the first time, so that’s gonna be fire,” Davido said in a recent interview on Hot 97”.
The latest information by the Fall hit-maker strengthens earlier comments by Mr Akwasi Agyemang for Ghana to work determinedly to preserve the chance of organising festivals such as AfroNation and Afrofuture.
In an interview with Accra based Asaase Radio earlier this year, Mr Agyemang disclosed that his outfit was ready to prove the impact of such events through the ‘December in GH’ initiative.
“We want to go back to cabinet and say ‘this is the document, this is what we did in ‘December in GH’, this is what they are saying, this is the impact, these are the numbers that came in; for us to sustain this to a level.
“Other countries are pushing. I mean I know, Ruddy, talk to the Afrochella guys and Little Havana. People have approached them. Countries have approached them to bring the events to them,” he is quoted to have said.
AfroNation is an all-inclusive music and arts festival meant to celebrate and eulogise African culture across various continents, not just Africa.
The maiden edition was held in 2019 after the organisers signed a 5-year partnership deal with the government of Ghana.
However, the event was put on hold the next year following the outbreak of coronavirus and its resultant effects on events and ban on social gatherings.
Last year, the event organised by Live Nation, Event Horizon, Smade Entertainment, and Memories of Tomorrow returned with a bang where revelers were entertained with performances by America’s Meek Mill as headline artiste, Nigeria’s P Square, Tiwa Savage, Rema, Ckay and Ghana’s team of Kuami Eugene, KiDi, Gyakie and Camidoh among others at the two days festival.
