COVID-19 Has Contributed To The High Rate Of Teenage Pregnancies- NGO
The President of Coalition of Non- Governmental Organisations (NGOs) Alhaji Mohammed Bumbida, says the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has contributed massively to teenage pregnancy currently roaring.
He explained that some of the girls could not withstand the hardships the COVID imposed so they had to sleep with men for survival.
Alhaji Bumbida made this known at a Sexual Abuse Program held by the National Youth Authority (NYA) at Adum in Kumasi.
He enumerated to wontumionline.com some of the other causes of the menace as lack of good parental care, peer influence, unwarranted materials on social media, etc.
“Parents should monitor their children and bring them up well,” he emphasized.
For her part, the Ashanti Regional Director of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Cynthia Martins said girls should dress decently to avoid sexual abuse.
She emphasized that sex education should be given to teenagers to enlighten them on the dangers of premature sex and teenage pregnancies.
The Private Legal Practitioner encouraged girls to report any form of sexual harassment they encounter to the police.
