Cocoa Crisis: Thieves are now targeting avocado pears, while dry cocoa beans sit there – Col. Damoah Blames Mahama

Member of Parliament for Jaman South, Colonel Kwadwo Damoah, MP for Jaman South, accuses government of neglecting Ghana’s most iconic cash crop, Cocoa

Speaking at Miremalo in the Bono Region, the MP lamented that cocoa once regarded as Ghana’s economic backbone has lost significant value, to the extent that thieves now prefer stealing avocado pears instead of cocoa beans.

According to him, the development highlights the severity of challenges confronting the cocoa sector. “It is worrying that dry cocoa beans are left untouched while thieves target avocado pears. This clearly shows how much cocoa has lost its worth,” he stated.

Hon. Damoah blamed what he described as poor policy decisions for the downturn in the industry, arguing that the current situation has weakened farmer confidence and livelihoods.

He further noted that cocoa farmers in the Jaman South Constituency are increasingly frustrated, citing what they see as an inadequate response from government to falling producer prices and broader sector challenges.

Farmers in the constituency echoed the MP’s concerns, expressing deep disappointment in the government’s response to the sector’s mounting challenges. Many say they have been left vulnerable, with inadequate support structures and no clear path to recovery.
