CJ Has Freedom To Appoint Me As Her Lawyer: Godfred Dame Tells Critics
Beleaguered Chief Justice Her Ladyship Gertrude Torkornoo, has the freedom to appoint any counsel of her choice, lawyer Godfred Dame has said to critics who are raising issues of conflict of interest.
The renowned former Attorney General told Kwaku Dawuro on Movement TV that he has always championed the issue of judicial independence and sees nothing wrong with the Chief Justice appointing him as her lawyer.
“Can’t the CJ pick her lawyer at a time she has disturbed? I am not conflicted …There is no basis for conflict of interest. She has freedom to appoint any counsel of her choice. When I was Attorney General, I always spoke on judicial independence. It is dear to my heart; I have always been talking about it”, he said.
Considering the injustices worked against Chief Justice Torkornoo, Dame stated that it was time for people with conscience to stand up and act.
“There are lot of unfairness and injustice worked against the woman and it about time people who have conscience and good heart for the country stand up for what is right”, he said.
Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo was suspended from office by the President of the Republic, John Dramani Mahama.
The president’s actions, which are said to be grounded in Article 146 (10) of the 1992 constitution, were primarily inspired by three petitions that the president received seeking the removal of the Chief Justice from office.
