Cedi Appreciation Useless if Food Prices Stay High – Bekwai MP Slams Gov’t

The Member of Parliament for Bekwai, Lawyer Ralph Poku-Adusei, has raised serious concerns about the rising cost of living in Ghana, despite the recent appreciation of the cedi.

He warned that the benefits of the stronger cedi is meaningless if everyday essentials like food remain expensive.

Speaking on the economic situation on Accra based Asase Radio, the Bekwai MP highlighted that buying fufu now costs nearly an entire month’s salary for many citizens.

“let the cedi appreciation affect the lives of the people, today as we speak, food is the most expensive thing in Ghana. One meal of fufu can cost you someone’s salary”

Hon. Poku-Adusei emphasized that the only way ordinary Ghanaians can truly enjoy the gains of the cedi appreciation is if food prices and the costs of other essential goods reduce drastically.

He challenged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) not to celebrate the drop in the dollar exchange rate alone but to be more concerned about the high cost of living that continues to affect the average Ghanaian.

“The NDC should not only take credit for the cedi’s appreciation but must also ensure that these gains reflect in the prices of food and other necessities,” he said. The MP urged the government to focus on policies that will ease the burden on households by making food and goods more affordable.
