Member of Parliament for Manso Adubea Constituency, Hon. Nana Yaw Frimpong Addo, has launched a scathing attack on Finance Minister Hon. Ato Forson and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government over the recent increase in cocoa prices.
Speaking on the Wontumi morning show, Addo stated that buying cocoa in bulk as finance minister is a sign of weakness, demonstrating a lack of strategic vision for the sector.
The price of cocoa has skyrocketed to 8,000 from 6,500 within a mere three months under the NDC government, leaving many farmers and industry stakeholders bewildered. The MP emphasized that cocoa farmers should receive at least 6,000, highlighting the need for fair pricing and better revenue distribution.
He believes the finance minister and NDC have opportunities to lower cocoa prices, which could stimulate economic growth and benefit the country as a whole.
According to Hon. Addo, Ghana won’t benefit from the recent cocoa price increase, citing concerns about the government’s handling of the cocoa industry.
He argued that the government’s approach to buying cocoa in bulk is not a sustainable solution and may have long-term consequences for the sector.
