Bofoakwa Tano Seal Ghana Premier League Return After Beating Eleven Wonders On Penalties

Bofoakwa Tano have made a return to the Ghana Premier League after a 16-year stint in the National Division One League.

The Sunyani-based side’s return to the Ghanaian top flight was confirmed after they won the Division One League – Zone  One – playoff final against Eleven Wonders at Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

Bofoakwa Tano won a penalty shootout 7-6 after the game ended 1-1 following 120 minutes of football.

Leslie Aryeetey converted a 7th minute penalty to give Bofoakwa the lead, going into the break with the advantage. Two minutes after recess, Zakaria Osman equalized for Eleven Wonders.

The 90 minutes did not produce a winner and the subsequent 30 minutes of extra time did not settle the game as well.

A penalty shootout then had to determine which team becomes the third to get promoted to the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League.

Bofoakwa held their nerves and emerged 7-6 winners from the shootout to seal a return of Premier League football to Sunyani following their relegation in the 2006/07 season.

They join Nations FC and Heart of Lions to gain promotion the GPL next season.
