Speaking with Entertainment journalist, Kwame Dadzie on an interview session on YouTube on Monday, January 16, 2023, the Broda Broda hitmaker said Highlife constituted the foundation of Ghana’s music identity and that if deliberate measures were not taken to preserve and promote the genre, it will lose out to the likes of Afrobeats.
“Like other countries have the genres they are known for and making the efforts to sell it to the world, we should also consciously and jealously guard our bedrock genre which is Highlife and project it so that it doesn’t get to a point where our identity gets wiped out completely.
“We should infuse a bit of Highlife in any genre of music to maintain our bedrock identity of highlife. So you could be doing dancehall, Afrobeats, hip hop and other genre, but you infuse a bit of highlife in it so that everybody will understand that this is from Ghana,” he said.
Making a contribution to the December in Ghana Festivities, and its impact on the music industry, the Mansa hitmaker commended the productive output of the initiative and encouraged musicians to make good use of the opportunities it provided to market their works to a global audience.
“The event is a beautiful one which projects Ghana in a positive light and it keeps getting better every year. The world is watching us and it is a very good avenue for us to explore as musicians and so what we can do is to take an advantage of this opportunity and sell our craft to the world,” he said.
The multiple award-winning artiste, songwriter and record producer’s fourth album, Original, is scheduled for release this Friday, January 20, 2023.
