ASANTE DEFENCE FORCE THREATENS NDC OVER ANTI-AKAN/ASANTE SYSTEM
The Asante Defense Force (ADF), wishes to express its deep concern regarding the recent nominations announced by the Government of the Republic of Ghana, under the leadership of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, for the positions of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) within the Ashanti Region.
After a careful review of the nomination list, it has come to our attention that a significant number of the nominees for these key leadership roles are individuals who are not of Akandescent, and more importantly, not native to the Asante ethnic group.
This alarming development represents a sharp departure from established norms and traditions that have guided local governance within Ghana for decades.
It is worth noting that similar appointments in other parts of the country, particularly the five Northern Regions and the Volta Region, consistently reflect an emphasis on appointing indigenes who understand the cultural landscape, language, and specific developmental needs of their communities. Unfortunately, this principle seems to have been overlooked in the current nominations within the Ashanti Region.
We wish to state clearly and respectfully that this approach is unacceptable to the people of Asanteman. Leadership at the district and municipal levels must be rooted in cultural
“THE SECRET WARRIORS”ADFADF understanding, trust, and familiarity with local issues. There is no shortage of qualified, committed and loyal members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) within the Akan and Asante communities who are capable of serving in these roles.
We therefore respectfully call on H.E. the President to reconsider and revise these appointments. We urge that individuals appointed to head the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies in the Ashanti Region be persons of Akan descent, and preferably Asantes, who can represent the interests, identity, and developmental aspirations of the people.
The nominees whose appointments we find deeply concerning include the following: Ahafo Ano South East-Ibrahim Yamba Nelson Issaka, Ahafo Ano South West-Abubakar Sedik Atwima Nwabiagya North-Mba Zacharia Allenbila, Bekwai-Salifu Issaka, Adansi North-Charles Kofi Ogbeh, Adansi Asokwa-Albert Dakurah, Adansi Akrofuom-Gariba Mohammed Mustapha, Obuase East-Adwovu Kofi Williams Tafo-Abubakari Sadiq, Oforikrom-Anwel Sadat Ahmed, Asokwa-Amo Kemel, Asokore Mampong-Ben Abdallah Alhassan, Ejura Sekyere-dumase-Rafiu Adams Seidu, Sekyere Afram Plains-Abubakar Issaka, Sekyere East-Ibrahim AdamsBosomtwe-Abdullai Hamidu, Efigya Kwabre North-Emmanuel Jackson Agumah.
We further caution all Assembly Members in the Ashanti Region to resist voting to confirmthese nominees. We urge them to stand with their communities and uphold the values and traditions of our people.
Should the government fail to take appropriate steps to address this legitimate concern, the Asante Defense Force, will be left with no option but to stage a peaceful yet determined protest across the Region to express our collective dissatisfaction under the banner:
“POLITICAL FAIRNESS FOR AKANS”
Furthermore, we shall formally communicate our concerns to the Diplomatic Missions in Ghana, highlighting what we view as marginalization, cultural insensitivity, and the undermining of community trust in the structures of local governance.
We emphasize that our appeal is not a call for ethnic division, but rather a firm stand for fairness, respect, and equity in national governance.
The values and sensitivities of all ethnic groups in Ghana must be treated with equal respect. What is deemed inappropriate in one Region should not be imposed on another. We remain committed to peace, dialogue, and the unity of Ghana, but we also stand resolute in defending the cultural and political integrity of Asanteman and the broader Akan Community.
Signed,
