An Arsenal fan has been arrested for shining a laser pointer in Mykhailo Mudryk’s face during Wednesday’s Premier League clash with Chelsea.
Mudryk was a January transfer target for the Gunners after scoring 12 goals in 44 games for Shakhtar Donetsk but instead completed a move to London rivals Chelsea.
The Ukraine international was targeted by a supporter during Arsenal’s 3-1 win at the Emirates and a bright light being shone on his face was picked up by television cameras. The north London club have now confirmed a supporter has been identified and arrested.
Their statement reads: “An arrest has been made following the use of a laser during last night’s match.
“This behaviour is dangerous and totally unacceptable, and we will fully support the police with their enquiries. We will obviously take the strongest possible action.”
Arsenal were too good for Chelsea in midweek as Martin Odegaard opened the scoring in the 18th minute. Another strike from the Norwegian and Gabriel Jesus’ tenth league goal of the season had the hosts 3-0 up by half time, though Chelsea did reduce the deficit to two when Noni Madueke responded just after the hour mark.
Mudryk has contributed two assists but is yet to score in the Premier League for Chelsea. The bloated state of the Blues’ squad has also made regular starts tough to come by in recent weeks, with his last being the 2-1 defeat to Brighton.
While the Blues have suffered one of their worst seasons in living memory under Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter and now Frank Lampard, the Gunners are still in with a shout of Premier League title glory. They are two points ahead of Manchester City, having played two games more.
