Akufo-Addo Stresses On Need For African Countries To Be Self-Reliant

President Nana Akufo-Addo has stressed the need for African countries to be self-reliant in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking on CNN’s Zain’s Exchange, the President argued that in order for African nations to survive the impact of COVID-19 on their economies, they have to be self-reliant.

President Nana Akufo-Addo was of the view that Africa has to “find a way to develop” the continent on its own without depending on the Western world.

“The catastrophe that has engulfed the world [COVID-19] has reinforced the need for our self-reliance in all aspects of life. This is absolutely critical for our ability to survive the crisis and the challenges of the future.”

“I think that the need for us to look within ourselves to solve our challenges has been heightened and intensified by what has happened within this past year. We cannot depend on charity or the generosity of foreigners for our sustainance.”

When asked about measures put in place to push local businesses to expand and thrive on the international market, President Akufo-Addo said his government has created a conducive environment for both local and foreign investors.

“What we are trying to do in Ghana is to create a level playing field for all businesses, whether foreign or domestic, so that people can freely and confidently invest in our economy because first of all, we are trying to manage the economy in such a way that there will be stability,” he said.
