AFCON 2021: Morocco Pip Ghana In Opener

Ghana was beaten by a solitary goal by Morocco in AFCON 2021 opener at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in Cameroon on Monday evening.

It was Sofiane Boufal’s late goal that ensured Morocco claim an important win against the Black Stars in an all-important AFCON opener.

Ghana started on a higher note, showed enough determination of snatching the opener but the Morocco defence led by Paris Saint Germain superstar, Achraf Hakimi managed to stay on their guards.

The Moroccans also came in very strong to get the opener but all efforts were to no avail as Ghana’s back-four of Daniel Amartey, Alexander Djiku, Abdul Baba Rahman and Andy Yiadom were phenomenal on the day.

The first half ended goalless with the Moroccans dominating possessions.

Ghanaian attacker Joseph Paintsil came close to getting the opener but his timeless strike was saved by the Morocco goalkeeper.

Unfortunately for Ghana, Sofiane Boufal had his strike in Ghana’s penalty box entering the back of the net in the 83rd minute of the entertaining encounter.

Goalkeeper Jojo Wollacot made an incredible punch in the dying embers of the game to save Ghana from conceding another goal.

Morocco have now beaten Ghana on two consecutive occasions, having won by a similar scoreline in a friendly match last year.
