Member of Parliament for Manhyia North, Lawyer Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, is advocating for compensation for victims of the recent Adum fire outbreak.
According to him, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) must take responsibility for the incident, which occurred on Friday morning in Kumasi.
Awuah emphasized that if investigations confirm the fire was caused by “dumsor” (power outages), the victims have every right to demand compensation.
“ECG offers a service, and if it’s as a result of their service, which Ghanaians are paying for, then the victims deserve compensation,” he stated.
The MP pointed out that PURC’s regulations provide for compensation in such cases, and he intends to push for this in parliament.
“We will ensure that the plight of the victims is salvaged, if not completely doused,” he assured.
The Adum fire outbreak ravaged a three-story commercial building, destroying several shops and causing panic among traders. The blaze started at the Blue Light Arena in the Railways area around 6 a.m. and spread rapidly before fire officers arrived to contain it.
Most of the affected shops dealt in mobile phones, accessories, jewelry, and clothing.
