A/R: NEYOD Launches Camping Against Climate Change And Flood Events

The Network of Empowered Youth for Development (NEYOD) has launched a campaign aimed at tackling climate change and flood events within the Asokore Mampong Municipality.

It commenced in September 2020 through a partnership with the No Business as Usual (NBU) project, Ashanti Regional Youth Network (ARYN), Calvary Hill Assemblies of God Church Cooperative Credit Union (AoGCCU) and will cover a 2-month period within all the adjoining towns of the municipality.

According to the President for NEYOD Mr. Hilton Terry Kessie, the project forms part of a broader one dubbed; “YOUTH TAKE LEAD LOCAL ACTIONS ON SDGs” targeting climate Action (SDG 13).

It is currently under implementation by 22 youth groups under the Voices of Youth Coalition hosted by Youth Empowerment Synergy (YES GHANA).

The project is being supported by 100% for the Children and Civil Society in Development  in Denmark.

The goal of Youth Take Lead project is for young people to take action in reducing the effects of climate change on society and contribute to the achievement of Global Goals.

Derived from the above goal, the aim of NEYOD’s campaign is to reduce the impact of flooding in the Asokore Mampong Municipality. The campaign geared towards raising awareness on SDGs and Climate Action among young people , sensitize the communities on the causes and effect of flooding and assist communities to identify local resources in reducing the impact of flooding.

The activities to be undertaken include;

A Young People’s Forum on SDGs and Climate Action,

SMS sensitization on Climate Action and flooding,

Discussion on selected community information centers on enhancing communal response to mitigate flood events

A video challenge on what young people are doing or can do to address flood events

A community dialogue with key community actors on flooding to form a flood “watch dog”

Desilting of gutters in a Parkoso electoral area in the Asokore Mampong Municipality.

Per the expectation of NEYOD, the President indicated that at least 100 young people will be sensitized on Climate change and flooding.
