GRNMA suspends strike after productive meeting with parliamentary committee

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has announced the suspension of its industrial action, which began on June 2, 2025.

The decision follows a fruitful engagement with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health on Thursday, June 12, 2025.

According to the GRNMA leadership, the meeting paved the way for an amicable resolution of the impasse with their employer concerning the implementation of their Collective Agreement signed in May 2024.

“We call on our dear nurses and midwives to resume their normal shift duties from Saturday, 14th June 2025, and assure you that we will not rest on our oars until the Collective Agreement is fully implemented,” GRNMA President, Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, and General Secretary, Dr. David Tenkorang-Twum, said during an online press conference.

The GRNMA leaders expressed gratitude to the Chairman, Ranking Member, and other members of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health for their timely intervention, which set a clear framework for the implementation of their Collective Agreement.

“We are thankful to the Chairman, Ranking Member and other members of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health for their timely intervention to set a clear framework for the implementation of our Collective Agreement,” the GRMNA said.

The GRNMA had embarked on a roadmap of industrial actions, including the wearing of red arm/head bands, withdrawal of Out Patient Department (OPD) and Emergency services, and total withdrawal of all nursing and midwifery services, to press their demands for the implementation of their Collective Agreement.

The Association’s leadership emphasized that they do not take delight in seeing patients suffer but cannot take good care of others when the system does not take good care of them.

“We are nurses and midwives trained to provide essential health services to the Ghanaian population, and matters affecting us which are brought formally to the attention of the employer must be treated with the urgency it deserves and in good faith,” she noted.

Nurses and midwives are expected to resume their normal duties on Saturday, June 14, 2025, pending the outcome of a follow-up meeting scheduled for June 26, 2025.
